Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich
A grilled cheese sandwich is one of the most beloved comfort foods in the world. Crispy, golden bread on the outside and warm, gooey melted cheese on the inside make it simple yet incredibly satisfying. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or a quick dinner, this sandwich proves that a few basic ingredients can create something truly delicious.
Ingredients
-
2 slices of bread
(white bread, sourdough, or whole wheat work well) -
2 slices of cheese
(cheddar is classic, but American, mozzarella, Swiss, or a blend also works) -
1–2 tablespoons butter, softened
Equipment Needed
-
Non-stick skillet or frying pan
-
Spatula
-
Butter knife
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Bread
Lay the two slices of bread flat on a cutting board. Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice. Make sure the butter reaches the edges—this helps the bread toast evenly and turn beautifully golden.
Step 2: Assemble the Sandwich
Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, into a cold skillet. Add the cheese slices on top of the bread. Cover with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing up.
Step 3: Cook Slowly
Turn the stove to medium-low heat. Cooking slowly is the secret to a perfect grilled cheese—it allows the bread to crisp while the cheese melts fully.
Cook for 3–4 minutes on the first side, until the bottom is golden brown. Use a spatula to gently lift and check the color.
Step 4: Flip and Finish
Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side for another 3–4 minutes, pressing lightly with the spatula. The bread should be crisp and golden, and the cheese should be fully melted.
If the bread browns too fast before the cheese melts, lower the heat and cover the pan for a minute to help the cheese soften.
Step 5: Serve Hot
Remove the sandwich from the pan and let it rest for about 30 seconds. Slice diagonally and serve immediately while the cheese is hot and stretchy.
