No-Oven Stovetop Bread (Soft & Fluffy)
This stovetop bread is a quick and satisfying alternative to traditional oven-baked bread. With simple ingredients and a frying pan, you can make soft, slightly crisp bread perfect for sandwiches, breakfast, or as a side with soups and stews.
Ingredients
-
2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 tablespoon sugar
-
1 teaspoon baking powder
-
2 teaspoons active dry yeast (optional for extra fluffiness)
-
¾ cup warm water (adjust as needed)
-
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
-
Extra oil or butter for cooking
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
-
In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder.
-
If using yeast, dissolve it in warm water with sugar and let it sit 5–10 minutes until frothy, then add to flour mixture.
-
Gradually add warm water and 2 tablespoons oil. Mix until a soft dough forms.
-
Knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.
2. Let the Dough Rest
-
Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.
-
Let it rest for 30–45 minutes if using yeast, or 15 minutes if skipping yeast. This allows the dough to rise slightly and relax.
3. Shape the Bread
-
Divide the dough into equal portions (4–6 pieces depending on size).
-
Roll or pat each portion into a flat round or oval, about ½–¾ inch thick.
4. Cook on the Stovetop
-
Heat a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat.
-
Lightly brush with oil or butter.
-
Place one dough round in the skillet. Cover with a lid.
-
Cook for 5–7 minutes on the first side until golden brown. Flip and cook another 5–7 minutes.
-
Adjust heat as needed; medium-low prevents burning while cooking through.
-
Repeat with remaining dough portions.
5. Serve
Serve warm as sandwiches, with butter, or alongside soups and stews.
Tips for Perfect Stovetop Bread
-
Keep the heat moderate—too high burns the outside before the inside cooks.
-
Covering with a lid traps steam and helps the bread cook evenly.
-
Optional: brush with butter after cooking for extra flavor.
-
For cheesy bread, sprinkle shredded cheese on the dough before covering and cooking.
Variations
-
Garlic & Herb: Mix minced garlic and dried herbs into the dough.
-
Whole Wheat: Replace half the flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor.
-
Stuffed Bread: Fill with cooked vegetables, cheese, or cooked meat before cooking.
Storage
-
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
-
Reheat on a skillet or microwave briefly to refresh softness.
