Freshly Baked Burger Buns
Soft, golden, and slightly sweet, homemade burger buns elevate any burger. These buns are tender yet sturdy enough to hold juicy patties and toppings without falling apart.
Ingredients
-
3½ cups (440 g) all-purpose flour
-
2¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
-
1 cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
-
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
-
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 large egg
-
1 egg (for egg wash)
-
1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
-
Optional: sesame seeds for topping
Instructions
1. Activate the yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Make the dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
3. Knead the dough
Knead on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes.
4. First rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
5. Shape the buns
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spaced slightly apart. Flatten each ball slightly with your hand.
6. Second rise
Cover the buns with a towel and let them rise for another 30–45 minutes until puffy.
7. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).
8. Apply egg wash
Whisk the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
9. Bake
Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
10. Cool
Allow the buns to cool on a wire rack before slicing. This helps maintain their soft texture.
