Shepherd’s Pie (Classic Comfort Food)
With Cottage Pie Variation
Shepherd’s Pie is a traditional British comfort dish made with a rich, savory meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden. When made with lamb, it’s called Shepherd’s Pie; when prepared with beef, it’s known as Cottage Pie. Both versions are hearty, filling, and perfect for family dinners, cold evenings, or make-ahead meals.
Ingredients
For the Meat Filling:
-
500 g minced lamb (for Shepherd’s Pie)
or minced beef (for Cottage Pie) -
1 tablespoon cooking oil
-
1 medium onion (finely chopped)
-
2 cloves garlic (minced)
-
1 medium carrot (diced)
-
1/2 cup green peas
-
2 tablespoons tomato paste
-
1 tablespoon flour
-
1 cup beef or lamb stock
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
1 teaspoon black pepper
-
1/2 teaspoon paprika
-
Salt to taste
-
1 teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary
For the Mashed Potato Topping:
-
4–5 medium potatoes (peeled and chopped)
-
2 tablespoons butter
-
1/4 cup warm milk
-
Salt to taste
-
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
-
1/4 cup cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)
Instructions
-
Prepare the Potatoes
Boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain well and mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and black pepper until smooth and creamy. Set aside. -
Cook the Meat Filling
Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add the minced meat and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. -
Add Vegetables and Flavor
Stir in diced carrots and peas. Add tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle in flour and mix well to thicken the sauce. -
Simmer the Sauce
Pour in the stock and add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, and herbs. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes rich and flavorful. -
Assemble the Pie
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Spread the meat mixture evenly in a baking dish. Spoon the mashed potatoes over the top and spread evenly using a fork. Create ridges for a crisp finish. -
Bake
Sprinkle cheese on top if using. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the top is golden and lightly crisped. -
Rest and Serve
Let the pie rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps it set and makes slicing easier.
Tips and Variations
-
Healthier Version: Use olive oil and low-fat milk for the mash.
-
Extra Creamy Top: Add a spoon of sour cream or cream cheese to the potatoes.
-
Vegetarian Option: Replace meat with lentils or mushrooms.
-
Spicy Twist: Add chili flakes or black chili sauce to the meat filling.
-
Make Ahead: Assemble the pie, refrigerate, and bake when needed.
