Classic Tomato Sandwich
The classic tomato sandwich is a celebration of fresh, ripe tomatoes. Layered between soft bread with creamy mayo and a sprinkle of salt and pepper, it’s a perfect summer lunch or snack. This straightforward recipe highlights the tomato’s natural sweetness and juiciness.
Ingredients
-
2 slices of fresh white or whole wheat bread
-
1–2 ripe tomatoes, sliced
-
1–2 tablespoons mayonnaise
-
Salt, to taste
-
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
-
Optional: fresh basil leaves or lettuce
-
Optional: a drizzle of olive oil or balsamic glaze
Instructions
1. Prepare the bread
Spread mayonnaise evenly on one or both slices of bread. This adds creaminess and helps prevent the tomato juices from making the bread soggy.
2. Slice the tomatoes
Wash and slice the tomatoes about ½ cm thick. Choose firm, ripe tomatoes for the best flavor and texture.
3. Assemble the sandwich
Layer the tomato slices evenly on one slice of bread. Sprinkle lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add basil leaves or lettuce if desired.
4. Finish and serve
Top with the second slice of bread and press lightly. Slice diagonally and serve immediately to enjoy the freshness of the tomatoes.
Tips for the Best Tomato Sandwich
-
Use ripe, in-season tomatoes for maximum flavor.
-
For added depth, brush the tomato slices lightly with olive oil or balsamic glaze.
-
Toasted bread adds texture and prevents sogginess.
-
Add thin slices of mozzarella for a Caprese-style variation.
Storage
Tomato sandwiches are best eaten immediately. If you need to prepare ahead, keep components separate and assemble just before serving.
