Magic Cookie Bars Recipe
Magic Cookie Bars are a classic no-bake (or quick-bake) dessert that layers a buttery crust, sweetened condensed milk, chocolate, coconut, and nuts into a decadent, chewy treat. Sometimes called “Seven Layer Bars,” these bars are simple to make yet incredibly rich and satisfying. Perfect for potlucks, holiday gatherings, or anytime you crave a sweet indulgence, they combine textures and flavors in every bite.
Ingredients
-
1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs (about 10–12 full sheets)
-
½ cup unsalted butter, melted
-
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
-
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
-
1 cup shredded sweetened coconut
-
1 cup chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, or almonds)
-
Optional: ½ cup butterscotch chips or white chocolate chips
Step 1: Prepare the Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it. Lining the pan with parchment makes removing the bars easier after baking.
Step 2: Make the Crust
In a medium bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs and melted butter. Mix until the crumbs are evenly coated and resemble wet sand. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan, forming an even layer. This buttery crust is the base for all the sweet layers above.
Step 3: Add Sweetened Condensed Milk
Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the crust. Spread it gently with a spatula to cover the crust completely, being careful not to mix into the crust layer.
Step 4: Layer the Toppings
Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the condensed milk layer. Next, add shredded coconut in a uniform layer, followed by the chopped nuts. If you’re using optional butterscotch or white chocolate chips, sprinkle them evenly on top as well.
Step 5: Bake the Bars
Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the center is set. Avoid overbaking, as the bars should be chewy and gooey in the middle.
Step 6: Cool and Slice
Remove the bars from the oven and allow them to cool completely in the pan at room temperature. For faster cooling, you can place them in the refrigerator for 30–40 minutes. Once cooled, use the parchment paper to lift the bars out of the pan and transfer to a cutting board. Slice into squares or rectangles with a sharp knife.
Tips and Variations
-
Use different combinations of chocolate, like dark chocolate chips or milk chocolate, to adjust sweetness.
-
Swap coconut for toffee bits for a crunchy alternative.
-
For nut-free versions, omit nuts or substitute with sunflower seeds.
-
Press the layers gently while assembling to ensure the bars hold together when cut.
